Sarajevo Innovation Day Lab
13th August 2017
On the 13th August, as part of the Sarajevo Film Festival Avant Première programme, Europa Cinemas held its second Sarajevo Innovation Day Lab.
This Innovation Day Lab, entitled "Cinemas as vital artistic, cultural and community hubs", focused on cinema programming, marketing, and audience building. There were 21 participants at the morning session and 28 at the afternoon session, which was open more widely to all industry professionals. Participants had come from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, the Netherlands and Lithuania.
Nina Peče, director of the Kinodvor Cinema in Ljubljana, presented the morning session which was primarily for regional exhibitors. She spoke about the key role of the cinema, which should be thought of as a privileged place for viewing films at a time when they are increasingly watched in other places.
The afternoon session was led by Javier Pachón (President of Cinéciutat and CinéArte) who gave a presentation on how more traditional and arthouse cinemas can exploit the power of social media and new technology to offer their audiences specialised and targeted content. He explained that the key to success is persuading viewers to "sacrifice" their precious time to go to the cinema by offering them value and quality.
