Europa Cinemas supports Ideal and Astor cinemas in Athens
Two emblematic cinemas in the center of Athens are threatened with closure. Demonstrations of support are taking place all over Athens, notably through the "Our Cinemas, Our City" campaign, initiated by the operators of these two cinemas.
Two emblematic cinemas in the center of Athens are threatened with closure. Demonstrations of support are taking place all over Athens, notably through the "Our Cinemas, Our City" campaign, initiated by the operators of these two cinemas.
Europa Cinema is joining this campaign to express its support. The Ideal cinema, a member of the network since 2005 and open for more than a century, and the Astor cinema, reopened in 2015 by the exhibitor and distributor of European arthouse films Andras Kontarakis, are in danger of being closed to the public for good, as the owner (social security organisation EFKA) wishes to rent these two buildings to new investors in the long term.
Europa Cinemas supports these two cinemas for the great diversity and quality of their programming and their work to build audience loyalty. Their efforts and results give real visibility to European films. The team that manages these two cinemas has always shown great professionalism in the management and follow-up of its commitments with Europa Cinemas. Both Ideal and Astor fully deserve the support of their guardian institutions.
Europa Cinemas strongly hopes that both cinemas will be able to maintain their role as leading cultural and social centres for the inhabitants and visitors of Athens, thanks to the continued kind support of their audiences and the European film industry.
