European Cinema Night
16-20 November 2020
This year 65 Europa Cinemas members across Europe will be taking part in the European Cinema Night from 16th to 20th November to celebrate together the richness of the European film culture.
Creative Europe MEDIA, in collaboration with Europa Cinemas, is organising the third edition of a unique outreach event with the objective of bringing Europe closer to citizens, while celebrating together the richness of European film culture. The European Cinema Night will take place in 65 cities across Europe and will reach approximately 10,000 people.
In 2018 and 2019, European Cinema Night events took place respectively in 34 and 54 Europa Cinemas member theatres in all countries of the European Union. MEDIA-supported films from over 30 different nationalities were successfully presented to audiences all over Europe, with the participation of renowned directors such as Nanni Moretti, Benedikt Erlingsson, Adina Pintilie, Teona Strugar Mitevska, etc.
In 2020, in this unprecedented year, the European Cinema Night will offer more than ever a great opportunity to highlight the essential role of cinemas in the circulation and visibility of European films, attract audiences to celebrate the richness and cultural diversity of European cinema, raise public awareness of how MEDIA supports Europe’s film industry and culture as well as film theatres.
This year, due to the current crisis, not only physical screenings at the cinemas will be proposed, but exceptionally as well virtual screenings via online platforms, if the cinema is currently closed.
Each cinema participating in the European Cinema Night will choose and screen a European non national MEDIA-supported film with free admission and create a debate around the movie and the European Commission’s support for the film.
Altogether 45 different MEDIA-supported films have been chosen by the exhibitors this year, according to their knowledge of their audiences, which embody the richness and diversity of the European audiovisual landscape.
This event is part of the European Commission “going local” communication campaign, which shows citizens how European policy is linked to their lives – in this case to the emotions they feel at cinemas – and how by attending a locally-grounded event they can be part of a globally-connected experience across Europe. By connecting cinemagoers in numerous cities across Europe, the ECN aims to strengthen their shared European identity rooted in our cultural diversity and values, hence bringing EU policies closer to their everyday lives.
