1 - First of all, how are you?

After getting over the initial shock I am now doing fine, given the circumstances. My focus at the moment is on structuring every day in a useful way, finally getting round to jobs I had been putting off and finding the strength to look forward and make the best of this difficult situation.

2 - How do you manage this particular situation from a professional point of view?

The teams at the cinemas in Aschaffenburg and Frankfurt have been put on short-time working and we are communicating pretty much all the time via video conferences, emails and WhatsApp. After the first few weeks, which were difficult for everyone, also from a personal perspective, we are now trying to focus on reopening. Together we are planning what we can show in the first few weeks – this may involve returning to films we were screening before the coronavirus crisis, as well as programming special series and events. In parallel, we are trying to stay in touch with our audiences while we are closed, via social media and our newsletter. And, of course, we are in constant contact with the governments of the states of Bavaria (Casino Aschaffenburg) and Hesse (Harmonie and Cinema Frankfurt) as well as with the regional film and cinema support funds due to the additional financial support programmes being put in place, etc.

3 - Which projects did you find interesting to keep up some activity and which ones were you able to set up?  

The website https://zurueckinskino.de brings together ideas and activities from independent German cinema operators. We have also put some of these activities into practice in our own cinemas.

4 - What are the initiatives of the State and regional and local public institutions to help movie theatres in this period of crisis? Do financial supports exist or are they being explored?

Germany’s federal government is supporting small businesses, as well as art and cultural institutions, through a number of programmes, which are offering one-off emergency assistance of between € 5,000 and € 20,000. The individual German states have also put various programmes in place.

In Bavaria the support takes the form of emergency assistance for businesses, on a sliding scale according to the number of persons employed. Hesse is offering small businesses immediate payments of up to € 20,000.

In addition, the Bavarian film and cinema support fund has arranged an immediate payment of € 5,000 to all cinemas with up to 7 screens. The FFF, which is responsible for film funding in Bavaria, has also doubled the prize money for the cinema programming awards and this will now be paid out at the end of June instead of in November. In Hesse emergency assistance for cinemas through the film and cinema support fund HessenFilm is still in the planning stage.

5 - What are your biggest concerns for the coming months? In your relationship with your audience, do you have any fears or, on the contrary, do you see reasons for optimism? Do you expect your ties with your audience to evolve, if yes how?

I am more concerned about the weeks and months after we reopen than I am about the unprecedented closure. It will take some time for new films to be given release dates, for the marketing activities of film distributors to get back to normal and for the fear of becoming infected, which will no doubt still be widespread, to be allayed, and until then we may have to operate right at the limits of economic viability. Nevertheless, I am convinced that, after months of being isolated and possibly confined to their homes, our audiences are now already looking forward to their next visit to the cinema. As a result of our “solidarity voucher” initiative we are receiving many, many emails, all of which include personal messages. Everyone is saying that they miss our cinemas and cannot wait for them to reopen, as well as telling us which films they want to see! I am taking this as a clear sign that we will not be losing any members of our audiences to streaming platforms. Quite the contrary, in fact!

Anhand einer Reihe von Interviews mit unabhängigen Kinobetreibern des Prüfungsausschusses, zieht Europa Cinemas Bilanz über die Situation des Kinobetriebs in der aktuellen Krise in Europa.

1 - Zuerst einmal, wie geht es Ihnen?

Nach der ersten Schockstarre geht es mir mittlerweile den Umständen entsprechend gut. Der Fokus liegt nun darauf, jeden Tag sinnvoll zu gestalten und liegengebliebene Tätigkeiten endlich zu erledigen und die Kraft zu finden, nach vorne zu blicken, um aus der schwierigen Situation dennoch das Bestmögliche herauszuholen.

2 - Wie gehen Sie mit der besonderen Situation aus professioneller Sicht um?

Das Team der Kinos in Aschaffenburg und Frankfurt ist in Kurzarbeit und wir tauschen uns quasi permanent via Videokonferenz, Emails und whatsapp aus. Nach den ersten für alle auch persönlich schwierigen Wochen versuchen wir uns nun auf eine Wiedereröffnung zu fokussieren. Gemeinsam planen wir, was wir in den ersten Wochen zeigen können – von der Wiederaufnahme von Filmen von „vor Corona“ über Sonderreihen und Events. Parallel versuchen wir während der Schließung in Kontakt mit unseren Gästen zu bleiben, via SocialMedia und über Newsletter. Und natürlich stehen wir in stetigem Kontakt zur bayerischen (Casino Aschaffenburg) und hessischen Landesregierung (Harmonie und Cinema Frankfurt) sowie zu den regionalen Film- und Kinoförderungen wegen weiteren finanziellen Untersützungsprogrammen usw.

3 - Welche Projekte waren interessant, um sie fortzuführen und welche konnten Sie umsetzen?

Auf der Seite https://zurueckinskino.de sind eine Sammlung von Ideen und Aktivitäten deutscher eigenständiger Kinobetreiber einzusehen. Einige dieser Aktivitäten haben wir auch in unseren Kinos umgesetzt.

4 - Welche Maßnahmen des Staates, der Länder und lokaler Einrichtungen unterstützen Kinos in dieser Krisenzeit? Gibt es bereits finanzielle Hilfen oder sind welche geplant?

Die deutsche Bundesregierung unterstützt mit einigen Programmen kleine Betriebe und auch künstlerische und kulturelle Einrichtungen. Dies sind einmalige Soforthilfen von 5.000€ bis 20.000€. Die einzelnen Bundesländer haben zudem unterschiedliche Programme.

In Bayern ist dies eine Soforthilfe für Unternehmen, gestaffelt nach angestellten Mitarbeiter*innen. In Hessen gibt es Sofortzahlungen für kleine Unternehmen bis zu 20.000€.

Zudem hat die bayerische Film- und Kinoförderung eine Sofortauszahlung von 5.000€ an alle Kinos bis 7 Leinwände veranlasst. Auch wurden die Preisgelder für die Kino-Programmpreise durch den FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF) verdoppelt und sollen anstatt im November bereits Ende Juni ausgeschüttet werden. In Hessen ist eine Soforthilfe für Kinos durch die Film- und Kinoförderung HessenFilm noch in Planung.

5 - Was sind Ihre größten Bedenken für die kommenden Monate? In Bezug auf die Kinobesucher, haben Sie irgendwelche Sorgen oder sind Sie eher optimistisch? Glauben Sie, dass sich die Beziehung zu Ihren Gästen weiterentwickelt, und wenn ja, wie?

Sorge machen mir mehr als die akute Schließung, die Wochen und Monate nach der Wiedereröffnung. Bis neue Filme Starttermine haben, die Marketingaktivitäten der Filmverleiher wieder auf normalem Betrieb laufen und bis die sicher weiterhin verbreitete Sorge sich anzustecken, abnimmt, wird einige Zeit vergehen und wir werden gegebenenfalls an der finanziellen Grenze der Wirtschaftlichkeit operieren müssen. Nichtsdestotrotz bin ich überzeugt, dass sich unsere Gäste nach Monaten der Isolation und gegebenenfalls häuslicher Quarantäne bereits heute auf den nächsten Kinobesuch freuen. Durch unsere „Solidaritäts-Gutschein“-Aktion erhalten wir viele, viele Emails, die alle von persönlichen Notizen geprägt sind. Alle schreiben, dass sie unsere Kinos vermissen, dass es bald wieder losgehen muss und welche Filme sie noch sehen wollen! Ich deute dies als ein deutliches Signal, dass wir keine Gäste an Streaming-Plattformen verlieren, eher im Gegenteil!
