A dark fairy tale, about a father and his son, a little hero, who have to face unscrupulous ogres, and see thanks to a promise light at the end of the tunnel. This movie denounces the exploitation of labour in the south Italian countryside, a contemporary problem rooted in the past, which does not only concern immigrants, but also Italians. To show the fatigue of working in the fields and the fear that takes dignity away from people, the De Serio brothers propose some disturbing scenes with human affection. In particular, the father-son relationship seems like a lifeline in a hostile sea. The movie finishes with a liberating response to the oppression they have suffered from.
